At 3:00pm on Sunday, April 16th in Van Buren Hall, Kinderhook, Concerts in the Village offers its 50th concert. “It’s Grand with Strings!” features works for piano and strings by Claude Debussy, Gabriel Fauré and Frank Bridge. This program brings together members of the Broad Street Chamber Players as CITV continues to celebrate the recent generous gift of a Steinway grand piano.
Artistic Director David Smith comments “For our enthusiastically received performance of Beethoven’s 2nd Piano Concerto in February not a seat was empty, with, of course, the piano assuming the starring role. Now “It’s Grand with Strings!” explores the same instrument’s chamber music possibilities, from Fauré’s expansive 2nd quartet to Bridge’s perfectly distilled trios. And in between we offer a rare performance of Debussy’s sparkling Piano Trio, an early work inspired by a trip to Italy – but missing for over a century until its rediscovery in 1982. Once again we take advantage of the ideal acoustics of Van Buren Hall, with spaciousness and immediacy perfectly balanced.”
Performing will be pianist Noah Palmer (CITV’s Assistant Conductor), Elizabeth Silver (Concertmaster of the Broad Street Orchestra), Jessica Belflower (the orchestra’s Principal 2nd Violin), Christine Orio (Principal Viola), and Erica Pickhardt (Principal Cello). All are delighted to be sharing the chamber music side of their extensive performing experience.
To follow this concert, at Kinderhook Reformed Church on April 30th the Broad Street Chorale, Broad Street Orchestra and soloists Robin Steitz, Maximillian Jansen and Noah Kleinberg present Handel’s gorgeous oratorio-ode L’Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato (“The Cheerful, the Thoughtful, and the Moderate Man”), with text by the great English poet John Milton. To conclude CITV’s 2022-2023 Season two concerts follow in May: On the 13th well-known clarinetist Paul Green, joined by violinist Elizabeth Silver and pianist Doris Stevenson, performs works of Debussy, Brahms, Poulenc and Menotti. And then on the 21st the Broad Street Chamber Players are joined by pianist Bethany Pietroniro for works of piano and winds by Mozart, Louise Farrenc and Poulenc.
