Last spring, after a combined 19 years working in the dog services industry, Lucy Medina and Lacey Teal teamed up to open their own businesses under one West Sand Lake roof: Medina’s grooming salon, Lulu’s Groom Room, and Teal’s doggie daycare, The Hound House.
“Whether it’s a day of play with new pals or a relaxing grooming session to keep them feeling their best, our team ensures top-notch care tailored to each dog’s unique needs,” Teal says. “From playful pups to seasoned seniors, we provide individualized attention, making sure your dog’s experience is always positive, fun, and stress-free.”
Now, less than a year later, Medina and Teal are the top dogs: Both Lulu’s Groom Room and The Hound House won Besties in their respective categories their first year in business.

Ever since Michael Fiacco of the former Bennington Furniture purchased Old Brick Furniture Co. in 2020, the business has been on upward trajectory. Old Brick now has 10 stores across the Northeast—12, if you count the two Metro Mattress locations in Colonie and Glenmont he purchased earlier this year. And another store—an Ashley Furniture owned and operated by Old Brick Furniture & Mattress—is coming to Crossgates this spring.

If you tuned into the 2025 Besties, you may remember that Best Local College/University Siena won the category last year, too. But since our March 2025 issue, the school has undergone a transformation, if only in name. Whereas last year Siena College was named a Bestie, this year, it’s Siena University that earned the honor.
“This is an exciting new chapter for Siena,” Tom Balwin, chair of Siena’s Board of Trustees, says of the New York State Board of Regents’ summer 2025 decision to grant Siena university status. “At a time when higher education is under pressure, Siena is choosing to invest, to lead, and to rise. The Board’s vote to transition to Siena University reflects the momentum we’ve built and the strength of our mission. It is not a change in who we are, but a bold step forward in who we are becoming.”
The change comes after New York State changed its definition of a university to “a higher education institution that offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees in various academic disciplines.” (Previously, the state required institutions to offer doctoral programs in at least three academic fields to be considered a university.) In changing the name, Siena leadership hopes to more accurately reflect the breadth of the school’s current academic offerings and strengthen its position in the competitive world of college admissions.

This year, one Saratoga Springs plaza has entered the Bestie scene in a big way. Located a 426 Maple Avenue, the plaza is home to not one, but three first-time Bestie winners or finalists.
“Saratoga Sweat’s first year has far exceeded my wildest dreams,” says Kat Stack, who opened her hot yoga and pilates studio in January 2025 and this year was named Best Pilates Studio and runner up for Best Yoga Studio. “Within two months we were selling out classes, and our community continues to grow.”
Stack shares her plaza with a couple of other noteworthy business, including Frameology, which this year won Best Optical Center, and KJ’s Barbershop, which landed third in the competitive Barbershop category. “I could not be more grateful for the kindness and camaraderie that the fellow business owners at 426 Maple have afforded me this past year,” Stack says. “We all joke that our plaza has the best vibes, but it’s really true—there’s magic brewing in our little corner of the world.”
